The central body of this fine composition includes an amphora vase supported by three nereids separated by shells and bouquets of leaves and fruit.
The vase's high relief decoration features garlands hang by rings. Between one festoon and another, ribbons knotted into the rings hold two tables with monograms C.O.S. on the first one and D.O. on the second, as well as two lion heads. In the upper part small grotesque masks.
Well-thought, imaginative and perfectly balanced composition. Unusual bronze with high quality finishes. Finely polished areas and detailed chiseling. Nice reddish transparent patina.
For parallels see the central part of the two mantelpieces in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, attributed by Charles Avery to Giuseppe de Levis (fl. 1577-1605), composed of a vase decorated with festoons supported by half-length female. In particular, the bare-breasted harpies with Phrygian hats, typical of de Levis, are very similar to our object.
Two monograms on the vase may indicate that the object was commissioned for a marital union.
