Candlestick with a Satyr, 16th-17th century

Bronze, golden patina with traces of dark brown patina
23x13,5x12 cm

This candlestick depicts a satyr with a cornucopia in his right hand, to which a pinecone-shaped bobeche is attached. The composition is set on a triangular base with two small tritons playing on shells.

Bode and Planiscig attributed candlesticks with satyrs to Andrea Briosco known as Riccio, while further studies related them to the workshop of Severo Calzetta di Ravenna.

There are two types of this model now: one with the standing satyr holding the candle with both hands, and one with the kneeling satyr holding the candlestick with his right hand.

Some compositions featured hybrid solutions and original elements often suggested by patrons.  This could be the case with our candlestick, made unique by the unusual presence of the two festive trumpet-playing tritons.

The sculptural compositions varied depending on the patron. As well, these pagan utensils were often combined with ink shells and thus served as both a candlestick and an inkwell. The somatic features of the satyr and the treatment of the fleece, vermicular in shape, reflect the production of Severo da Ravenna. The transparent patina reflect the best castings of the period.
