Historiated cup, Probably 17th century

Bronze, brown patina on jasper base
Overall 17x13x7 cm Bronze 10,5x13x7 cm

Curious bacellate bowl of ovoid form resting on octagonal plinth, mounted on a red jasper base.

Each segment of the bacellation depicts one of the Virtues in high relief with their attributes:
Faith with the cross
Hope with the anchor
Charity with the two children
Temperance pouring water
Prudence with the two-faced face and mirror
Justice with scales and sword
Fortitude with the column
Wisdom with the owl.

Decorative object difficult to be dated. The materiality of the casting and the late Renaissance style suggest an early modern casting. It would be interesting to carry out some scientific examination of the alloy.

To be further studied.
