The painting is closely derived, with minor variations, from the etching made in 1644 by Michel Dorigny from an invention by Simon Vouet. The engraving bears in the lower left margin an inscription: "SIMON VOUET PICTOR REGIUS PINXIT IN PALATIO REGALI"; in the lower right margin: "M. DORIGNY SCULP."; in the centre lower margin: "CUM PRIVILEG. REGIS. 1644".
The painting bears on the back on the frame a brush inscription: "CARAVAGGIO / DONO DELL'ILLUSTRE LETTERATO AGOSTINO GALLO". Agostino Gallo was a Sicilian writer, historian, collector and art expert (Palermo, 1790 - 1875).
