Artista fiammingo, XVIII secolo

Portrait of the painter Cornelis Schut

Oil on canvas
29.5x24.5 cm. Framed

The painting bears in the top right-hand corner a coat of arms and a barely legible inscription: "CORNELIS SCHUT / (...) FIGURAE / (...) ANTWERPAE / AETATIS SUAE 46."

A portrait of the painter Cornelis Schut (Antwerp, 1597 - 1655), a pupil of Rubens, can undoubtedly be recognized in this painting, not only because of the inscription on the canvas but also thanks to the engraving made by Lucas Vosterman around 1645 from a drawing by Anton Van Dyck. The composition of the print is faithfully reproduced in the canvas, except for a reduction in the lower part. It is worth noting that a sanguine drawing is catalogued at the Fundacion Goya en Aragon that, along with others, is part of a series executed by Goya around 1798-1799 and intended to be engraved by his friend Juan Agustín Ceán Bermúdez for the Historical Dictionary of the Most Illustrious Professors of Fine Arts of Spain. It is also worth noting that, as in our painting, the necklace worn by the painter can be recognized in Goya's drawing, which is absent in Vosterman's engraving.
