This canvas is of particular interest as it bears witness to what is considered the later of the various versions painted by Guercino, whose autograph prototype is now lost. However, the composition is known to us thanks to a fine workshop copy in the Pinacoteca Nazionale in Bologna, of which our painting is a faithful contemporary replica.
