Gabriel Bella
(Venezia, 1730 - Venezia, 1799)

View of Venice with the Procession of the Bucintoro on the Ascension Day

Oil on canvas
cm. 54x69,5. Framed

The painting is accompanied by an expertise of Prof. Federica Spadotto.

The painting represents the favourite theme of 18th century vedutists: the procession following the "Sposalizio del Mare" to San NicolΓ² on the Lido. The Doge aboard the Bucintoro, reached the mouth of the Lagoon, with a sumptuous procession of boats in tow, and threw a golden ring into the water. In this work we recognise the simple and almost impersonal narrative register typical of Gabriel Bella, who depicts the event like a chronicler in a naive and charming pictorial style.
