Penitent Mary Magdalene

Oil on canvas
cm. 113x94. Framed
This ecstatically rapturous Penitent Magdalene is the outcome of a conjuncture in which the dominant Neapolitan matrix is enriched with Roman and Emilian elements under the influence of Luca Giordano's painting. Between the late 17th century and the first half of the 18th century, eminent artists moved around who, while looking closely at Giordano and Solimena, sought more personal ways that would better bring out their talents: with reference to our painting, think for example of Nicola Malinconico, but even more so of Domenico Antonio Vaccaro in his youthful phase (Vision of Saint William of Aquitaine, Naples, Capodimonte Museum).
