Jan Baptist Weenix
(Amsterdam, 1642 - Amsterdam, 1719)

Landscape with horsemen stopping by a fountain and beggars

Oil on canvas
142x123 cm. Framed

The canvas bears barely legible signature in the lower right corner: "G (...) B WEENIX".

In this large canvas we find some of the typical motifs of Weenix's poetics: from his fascination with the warm Mediterranean light, which spreads golden in his paintings to illuminate the depiction of the landscape, the motifs of the horsemen's pause at the fountain, the beggars lying along the dusty roads, and the classical or rustic ruins that dot the Roman countryside. Our painting can be likened to Weenix's Works such as Landscape with Horseman at a Votive Chapel at the Brukenthal Museum in Sibiu, or Italian Landscape with Horsemen's Stop at a Fountain at the Centraal Museum in Utrecht.
