A pair of silver and ivory candlesticks, Germany, late 19th century, Hanau (?)

Cast and gilded silver candlesticks with floral decorations; suspended from the leafy stems are two carved elephant ivory (Elephas maximus Linnaeus, 1758 or Loxodonta africana Blumenbach, 1797) winged putti. Hallmarked under the bases with the marks for 800/1000 silver in use in Germany from 1888.
These candlesticks are typical of German production in the late 19th century and more specifically of the type of objects that were produced in the city of Hanau. From the mid to late 19th century, in fact, many reproductions in the French or German Rococo style were made in this city and most of the companies in Hanau chose styles reminiscent of the marks of 17th and 18th century manufacturers as their trademarks.
The 'father' of this industry was August Schleissner. The other leading company in Hanau was Neresheimer, founded in 1890 as the partnership of August and Ludwig Neresheimer with Jean Schlingloff. From the very beginning, Neresheimer offered a wide range of highly decorative objects such as mugs, cups, candlesticks and other sumptuous sideboard pieces.
In the objects in question, one can find all the types of construction typical of the time and the area, including the type of poorly chiselled casting and the galvanic gilding already used at the time. The marks shown fully confirm the period of production, as they came into use in 1888. The style of the elephant ivory putti fully confirms a Baroque revival, and the state of preservation and natural patinas leave no doubt as to the period of production.
