Carved ivory box depicting The Adoration of the Magi, 18th-19th century
Height x width x depth: 2 x 10.5 x 8 cm. Weight: 57.60 g.
Of oval shape made of elephant ivory (Loxodonta africana Blumenbach, 1797 or Elephas maximus Linnaeus, 1758) the plug-in lid finely carved with the biblical theme depicting the Magi at the Bethlehem grotto with the infant Jesus, Mary and Joseph. The episode appears in the Gospel of Matthew (Matthew 2:1-12) in the New Testament book.
In the upper part of the scene there is also a dove representing the Holy Spirit, one of the most widespread symbols in Christianity.
Item condition grading: **** good.
