Carved ivory relief depicting the Crucifixion of Christ, Burgundy, 16th-17th century

Elephant ivory (Loxodonta africana Blumenbach, 1797 or Elephas maximus Linnaeus, 1758) finely carved in high relief to depict the Crucifixion of Christ.
The composition is typical of the late Gothic period of the Northern European area; this is also evident in the particulars as it is finished in every detail and this would indicate a culturally high level on the part of both the artist and the client. Christ is positioned on a smooth cross, his head is bent downwards towards the right shoulder and his intimate parts are covered by a short loincloth supported by a side drape.
At the top of the cross there is a cartouche, positioned horizontally with the four folded sides alluding to a parchment or sheet, with the Titulus Crucis INRI (Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudeorum, which literally translates to '"esus of Nazareth, King of the Jews") in relief.
The other figures present are depicted with a prostrate aspect, praying or with their eyes turned towards the Saviour.
