Carved ivory sculpture of the Vergin and Child, France, 18th century

Height x width x depth: 18.5 x 4 x 2.5 cm. Weight with wooden base: 645 g, with case: 1120 g.

The artwork, carved in the round in elephant ivory (Loxodonta africana), depicts a standing Madonna with the Child placed on her arm; the son is depicted blessing with the globe (Globus cruciger) in his left hand; the head and eyes of the Virgin and Saviour are slightly turned to look straight ahead.
Ebonised turned wooden base. Wooden case covered in green velvet.
