Carved ivory sculpture of the Virgin and Child, French Gothic style, 15th-16th century

Height x width x depth: 12.6 x 5.5 x 7 cm. Weight: 645 g with plexiglass base.

The artwork, carved in the round in elephant ivory (Loxodonta africana), depicts a recurring subject in French Gothic sculpture and painting, an enthroned Madonna and Child. In order to balance the weight of her child, placed on one arm and on one side, Mary, seated on the throne with a lily symbol of purity and chastity in her right hand, leans mainly on one leg and reclines her head and torso; the head and eyes of the Virgin and Saviour are slightly turned to look in front of her. The arching and sinuous posture of the human figure is an element present in French Gothic sculpture; this pose creates a feeling of slight movement and gives elegance and vitality to the sculpted figures.
For similar sculpture refer to Madonna and Child of the 14th century, Picardie French Museum Amiens France.

Item condition grading: *** fair (wear, defects, missing right arm of the Child).
