Gilded icon depicting the Resurrection of Christ, Late 18th - early 19th century

Height x width x depth: 62.5 x 41.5 x 4 cm.
The scene is centered around the raised figure of the risen Christ holding the banner, the symbol of the Resurrection.
In the background, on the left, is the angel announcing the Resurrection and behind him the empty tomb. On the right, the three pious women at the tomb and Mount Golgotha with the three crosses are depicted. The Gospel narrates that three days after the Lord's death, the three women walked to the tomb carrying fragrant ointments. The Gospels disagree on the number of women who saw the Annunciation angel at the tomb: there are two for Matthew, three for Mark and Luke, and only the Magdalene for John. The appearance of the angel, whose "appearance was like the thunderbolt and his garment as white as snow" (Mt.28,3), is a veritable Theophany that scares the women and causes the soldiers to run away, those who, in this work, are at the bottom, at the Lord's feet, shown at the moment when they are trying to escape after the appearance has taken place.
On the Resurrection the Bible's account is very meager, which is why different iconographies of the event have been made over the centuries.
