Greek icon depicting the Transfiguration of Christ, Late 17th - early 18th century
Height x width x depth: 26 x 37.5 x 3 cm.
Greek icon representing the Transfiguration of Christ.
The iconography takes up Matthew's Gospel account at the moment when Jesus, on Mount Tabor, in a mandorla of divine light is transfigured and the prophets Moses and Elijah appear, depicted on either side of Christ.
This iconography has inconsistencies with the traditional one: Christ's robes, normally white, here are made in red and green, and the traditional illuminated mandorla is replaced here by a double red and blue circle, surrounded by golden rays.
Item condition grading: **** good, the lower part cut off and reassembled.
