Rare pair of marble winged Putti, Sicily, 17th century
Base heights: 79 cm, Putti heights: circa 120 cm.
Sculpted in the round in full Sicilian Baroque style, they are depicted in an upright, frontal position with the torso in a slight twist.
One of the two angels is gazing upward, one hand resting on his chest and the other open toward the viewer, his body facing in the opposite direction of his head, while the other is caught in the moment holding his robe with one hand and looking downward with the other, in the opposite direction of his leg and head. The curly hair and moving wings attached to the back add movement to the richly draped robes.
The antique Libeccio marble bases from Sicily and the polychrome marble bases below are of modern Sicilian manufacture.
