Russian icon depicting the Mother of God joy of all the afflicted, 19th century

Height x width x depth: 43 x 35.5 x 3 cm.
Our Lady "Joy of All the Afflicted" belongs to the group of so-called prayer icons, Marian images inspired by this hymn, celebrating the Virgin with poetic appellations.
The iconographic canon is rather late, dating in fact from the mid-17th century. According to tradition it reveals its thaumaturgic power in 1688. Legend has it that the sister of the patriarch Joachim, Esimia, was suffering from a fatal illness, and one day while praying she heard a voice that ordered her to raise her supplications to the icon of Our Lady, which was located in the Church of the Transfiguration. A liturgical ceremony in honor of the sacred image was taking place in the church. The woman was sprinkled with the blessed water and immediately rose, completely healed. The miracle occurred on October 24 and on this day the Orthodox Church instituted the feast dedicated to the icon of Our Lady Joy of all the afflicted.
