Russian icon depicting the Mother of God joy of all the afflicted, 19th century
Height x width x depth: 31.5 x 25 x 3 cm.
The Mother of God is depicted in the center full-length together with the child; the figures surrounding the Virgin are sick, hungry, handicapped, and suffering people of all categories, and they are helped by Angels as messengers of her maternal benevolence.
The thaumaturgical power of the Mother of God was first manifested in 1688 in Moscow. Efimia, sister of the patriarch of the Russian Church, was suffering from a fatal illness and while praying she heard a voice promising her healing if she prayed before the icon of the "Joy of All Afflicted," in the Church of the Transfiguration; Efimia was sprinkled with holy water during a service in honor of Our Lady and was healed.
