Russian icon depicting the Mother of God joy of all the afflicted, 19th century

Height x width x depth: 31 x 26 x 2.5 cm.
The thaumaturgic power of the Mother of God was first manifested in 1688 in Moscow. Efimia, sister of Ioakim, patriarch of the Russian Church, was suffering from an illness considered fatal. While invoking the Virgin she heard a voice promising her healing if she prayed before the icon of the "Joy of All the Afflicted," which was located in the Church of the Transfiguration. During a service in honor of Our Lady, Efimia was sprinkled with holy water and healed.
The Mother of God is represented in the center as a full-length figure; in this version she is alone, without the child, and corresponds to the Petersburg typology.
The figures surrounding the Virgin are sick, hungry, handicapped, and suffering people of all categories, and they are helped by Angels as messengers of her maternal benevolence.
