The painting bears an inscription in cartouche in the lower margin: "CARLVS CIGNANI ACCADEMIAE CLEMENTINAE PRINCEPS / PERPETVVS NOBILIS FLORENTIAE BONOMIAE ET FOROLIVI / EQVES ET COMES ANNVM AGENS 89 OBIIT VERO FOROLIVI / ANNO 1710 ETATIS SVE 92".
The composition of the painting derives from the engraving made in 1717 by Thomassin Simon Henri to a drawing by Felice Cignani, son of the artist. Compared to the engraving, our painting also features a coat-of-arms in the upper left-hand corner and a necklace with an honour around the neck of the portrait.
