The painting bears in the top right-hand corner a coat of arms and a barely legible inscription: "CORNELIS SCHUT / (...) FIGURAE / (...) ANTWERPAE / AETATIS SUAE 46."
Thanks to the inscription on the canvas and the engraving made by Lucas Vosterman around 1645 to a drawing by Anton Van Dyck, we can recognise the portrait of the painter Cornelis Schut (Antwerp, 1597 - 1655), a pupil of Rubens, in the painting. The tel a faithfully reproduces the engraving, except for a reduction in the lower part.
