Reliquary cross in silver, coral and rock crystal, Sicily, 18th century

the artwork has a circular base made entirely of silver filigree, above which is a curved rock crystal block, above which is a knot supporting the cross also made of filigree
The reliquary cross bears a relic surrounded by Mediterranean coral pods (corallium rubrum) at the centre of the intersecting arms. The cross heads end in facetted lapis lazuli, stones that were already thought to ward off fear and envy in the Middle Ages; Lapis lazuli also appears in the Bible as one of the stones on the breastplate of the High Priest of Jerusalem.
Apparently not hallmarked.
Enclosed in an antique leather case with gilt decoration.

Item condition grading: **** good, restorations, missing and replacements.
