Majestic and valuable work that represents the will of Pope Pius IX, pontiff from 1846 to 1870, to disseminate and promote his cultural policy characterized by notable urban, architectural and artistic interventions.
Work conceived to be distributed monthly in installments, with the publication of two tables per month with the relative critical apparatus. The publishing enterprise was financed through St. Peter's Pence and was enhanced by the decision to entrust the curatorship to Cacchiatelli and Cleter: the «Artistic Publishers» (as they are cited in the texts of the plates) who created a rich iconographic apparatus that would fuel awareness of the Pope's commitment.
Two oblong volumes, 39x30 cm, hard cover, contemporary binding, blue marbled paper, spine and corners in imitation leather embossed in gold. Collated 187 engravings of exceptional workmanship and beauty, "photographic" testimony of the past.
