Venezia, leone di San Marco

cm.23x45
Bronze depicting the winged lion of San Marco or Marciano, symbolic representation of the evangelist Mark. The sculpture recalls exactly the one placed at the top of the column in Piazza San Marco in Venice, a hybrid between a lion and a griffin, produced in early Eastern Hellenism by a Greek or Greek-Ionic artist, between the end of the 4th century and the beginning of the 3rd century BC, then reworked as a winged lion. Standing on all fours with the front paws on the pages of the open book, where we read "PAX TIBI MARCE / EVANGELISTA MEVS" - The lion measures 23x45 cm, the base 25.3x30.5 cm, and is in excellent condition with beautiful patina . First decades of the 20th century
