The subject represented in the painting, the parrot Cocò, is not rare in Filippo De Pisis' artistic production. The animal was usually represented in paintings made around the 1940s and it was not uncommon, according to accounts of the time, to meet the artist walking around Venice with Cocò on his shoulder. Filippo De Pisis dedicated poems to Cocò.
