A HANGING SCROLL WITH A RUBBING WITH HANSHAN AND SHIDE
China
123 x 60 cm (the rubbing)
Provenance: Italian private collection.
The print is the rubbing of a stone carving - preserved in the Hanshan temple of Suzhou - made by Tang Renzhai (active late 19th century), who reproduces in detail a well-known painting by Luo Ping (1733-1799), currently preserved at the Nelson-Atkins Museum in Kansas City, which depicts Hanshan and Shide, inseparable Zen monks who lived during the Tang dynasty.
A similar example is preserved in the Princeton University Art Museum (inv. y1958-216).
