Inkwell with griffins, Padua, 16th-17th century

Bronze with black bituminous patina
21 x 14 x 12 cm

The cup is supported by three griffins who hold garlands of fruit in their beaks which decorate the perimeter of the inkwell. On the lid a satyr with a dazed face rides a fourth griffin. One of the griffins twists its head in an attempt to eat the fruit contained in a vase held up by the satyr.

The bronze materiality, the deep and bituminous patina and the "orange peel" surface place this playful table monument in the context of the 16th-17th century Paduan foundries.
