Madonna enthroned with Child, France, early 16th century
Oak wood
115 x 44 x 40 cm
The imposing sculpture represents a subject widespread in northern Europe, particularly in the Valtellina area. The Madonna is depicted as a queen, seated on a throne with simple but elegant Renaissance-style decorations. She velds a standing naked Child with a bunch of grapes in his hand. There are some similarities with the lost sculpture from the oratory of San Rocco al Ponte a Sondalo. The sculpture is hollowed out on the back.
