Danilo Mauro Malatesta, artist and photojournalist, uses the ancient technique of ambrotyping to narrate a moment of rebirth. The glass, sensitised with wet collodion, reflects the image of the sublime mythological violence of the Baroque, a defenceless and desperate Proserpine in Pluto's strong grip. By breaking the plate, the artist intervenes in that gripping grip, breaks that violence and all that it brings with it, that which in Bernini's marble, some forget to grasp. The chromatic manipulation applied in the contact print of the shattered slab alludes to the journey to Hades and the subsequent, arduous ascent.
The triptych on auction is the only reworking produced by the artist of the work on permanent solo exhibition in the Oratorio of Santa Silvia in the Rectory Church of Sant'Andrea al Celio, among the frescoes by Guido Reni and Domenichino. It is a reproduction and not a copy because the complex technique of contact printing on broken plates inevitably involves variations, which makes each print unique and unrepeatable.
