Brusoni, Lucius Domitius: FACETIARUM EXEMPLORUMQUE, BOOKS VII. Impressum Romae, 1518, for Iacobum Mazochium.

1 volume, in folio, 29.5x21.5 cm, c. (1), CCXXI, (2). Ancient binding in full limp parchment.
New edition of the Sententiarum liber, retitled by Brusoni after the original edition of 1516; on the frontispiece titles printed within a woodcut frame with cardinal's coat of arms; numerous large initials finely engraved in the text. At least in the author's intentions and according to what is stated in the title , the work was intended to be a rich collection of anecdotes and moral exempla; on the contrary, the long sequence of passages characterized by witticisms and witty answers inspired by the most varied sources (Cicero, Martial and other classics) decreed the appreciation of the work by the public and the commercial success of the book, which was republished several times in the following years. Little or nothing is known about the author of this work, a 16th century scholar of Salerno origins, but it seems that he was close at the Roman Academy, of which the typographer Mazzocchi involved here was a bookseller. Title page with restoration and oxidation on the upper margin, small woodworm damage on the initial and final leaves with tiny losses of text; on the verso of the first flyleaf, a long handwritten note in Indian ink.
