Partially colored chalcographic frontispiece. In-folio, mm. 360x 235, pp. (16), 872, (66). Contemporary binding in full ancient parchment. Defects on the spine, partially detached covers. Woodworm damage on the spine and on the internal margin of the text, mainly affecting the last 7 leaves (Index rerum and colophon), with missing and lost text. Printer's mark on the colophon, more than 1300 woodcut illustrations of plants.
Second Latin edition of Dodoens's work, as well as his "last and most comprehensive botanical work" (Hunt). This edition includes a greater number of illustrations than the first. Plantin purchased some of the woodcuts, the others were carved by the artist Pieter van der Brocht whose collection, preserved in Berlin, constitutes one of the most important collections of botanical illustrations of the 16th century still in existence.
