In-4°, mm. 215x145, pp. 173, (3) / cc. 57, (1). Complete. 2 cinquecentine bound in a single volume. Back binding in full ancient parchment with gold titles on the spine. Edges of the cc. in blue. Contains: Boezio Severino of the Consolation of Philosophy. Translation from Latin into Italian by Benedetto Varchi (1503-1565). Printed in Florence in 1551. Entirely woodcut frontispiece with a restored defect on the lower margin, yellowed stain on the frontispiece and on c. A2, otherwise the text is clear and clean. Composed around the year 524, when the author was locked up in prison, where he awaited capital execution, which he would suffer in 525. Considered a masterpiece of Christianity and the last great text of classical antiquity. Bound at the end is the Treatise on Human Love by Flaminio de' Nobili (c. 1530-1590), printed in Lucca in 1567 (the first is from 1556) for Vincenzo Busdraghi. Title page with typographical device (dragon within a frame). Leaves with clear text and sporadic foxing. Old ownership signatures on the first 2 blank pages.
