Schiller, Friedrich: History of the Thirty Years' War. In Capolago, Tip. Elvetica 1831

Format in-8ยฐ, (4), 312 / (4), 357, (1). Contemporary binding (19th century) in half leather, gold titles on the spine. Sporadic foxing and light water stain. Old edition from 1831 complete in 2 volumes, printed in Capolago for Tip. Elvetica. Work of the German historian Friederich Schiller (1759-1805). Schiller saw in this war (1618-1648) the first conflict on a European level that ultimately, in the Peace of Westphalia, brought devastated Europe to a new awareness: that the states of Europe constituted a community and that a war like this, which had halved the population of central Europe, must never happen again. Schiller when he wrote the work did not yet know the devastating consequences that the French Revolution would have for the European states, not to mention the terrible wars of the twentieth century. But this certainly does not diminish the value of this voluminous research.
