Original skullcap used by His Holiness Pope PIUS XI. Silk skullcap, preserved on a wooden support with the wording on a silver metal band in gold letters, in relief, ZUCCHETTO BELONGING TO H.H. PIUS XI
A very rare relic.
The skullcap was given by the Supreme Pontiff to the engineer Leone Castelli, responsible for the renovation works in the Vatican commissioned by Pius XI and carried out in the ten years following the Lateran Pacts (1929).
Pius XI had commissioned Castelli, who had moved from Milan to Rome, to rebuild a complete state, the Vatican State, including government buildings and the railway. To this end, practically all the buildings around St. Peter's Basilica dating back to the 16th century were demolished (only Santa Marta Vecchia and the Church of the Abissini were spared).
Tears in the silk of the tile, various wears. The zucchetto is guaranteed original with expertise, even though it does not have the certification of the Vatican secretariat, considering the circumstance of the particular donation made in ancient times and of certain provenance.
