A pair of Japanese bone okimono, Meiji Period, 1868-1912
Total weight: 522.4 g.
represented by two distinct figures: an elderly man and a Japanese woman.
The elderly man, probably a sage, has a serene and friendly expression with finely detailed facial features made of bone, as well as his hands and some elements on his robe, richly decorated with animal figures and geometric elements. He wears a traditional headdress and clothes richly decorated with decorative carvings. His long beard and staff accentuate his wisdom and advanced age. Below is signed with an engraving on a bone slab.
The woman is depicted with a delicate and graceful expression, emphasised by her traditional hair, gathered with typical ornaments; she also has her face, hands, hair clips and some elements on her dress made of bone. She wears a kimono characterised by complex geometric and naturalistic patterns. She elegantly holds a parasol, a symbol of refinement and traditional femininity. Underneath she bears a signature in red lacquer.
Height x width x depth man: 17.2 x 4.7 x 3.6 cm;
height x width x depth woman: 18.8 x 5.1 x 3.5 cm.
