A silver-mounted Nautilus cup, German ambit, 17th-18th century

Height x width x depth: 16 x 15 x 13 cm. Total weight: 715 g approx.
resting on a circular base decorated with geometric engravings arranged in repeated patterns. At the centre of the base rises a large natural seashell (Turbo Marmoratus).
To enrich the work inspired by maritime, naturalistic and mythological themes, above the shell rises the sculpted figure of Neptune, or Poseidon, god of the seas, depicted with grandeur and majesty. He holds a trident, symbol of his dominion over the sea, and is depicted in a dynamic pose, in the act of riding a dolphin.
