Important pair of Italian silver and marble two-handled vases, Rome, first half of the 19th century

Height x width x depth: 41 x 20 x 16 cm. Total gross weight: approx. 3350 g.

Empire line resting on square marble bases, smooth circular foot, amphora body with smooth tapered neck bordered at the top by a laurel leaf border and decorated with acanthus leaves at the bottom. Marble and silver lids with acorn topping. Side handles with pàtere, ornamental motifs in the form of a circular rosette.

Hallmarked with the chamber marks in use in Rome after 1815 for silver at the title of 10 ounces and 16 denari (889/1000) and with the mark of the silversmith; although the right-hand side of the hallmark is no longer legible, the most likely hypothesis is that it is the master silversmith Vincenzo II Belli (patented 1828 - 1859) who used four types of hallmarks, one of which looks very similar to this one.
