Large English sterling silver salver, London, 1921
Height x diameter: 8 x 63 cm. Weight: approx. 6400 g.
of circular form resting on four small feet decorated with masks of satyrs and grape shoots, the brim is richly decorated in turn with plant volutes and grape shoots. In the centre is the following inscription: ‘Presented by the Members of the Centon Durf Club To Their President His Excellency Sir William Henry Manning G C M G H B G C B Gobernor of Ceylon 23rd March 1925’.
With original wooden case.
Sterling silver, fully hallmarked with the marks for silver in use in London in 1921-22; silversmiths Catchpole & Williams. On the verso the inscription ‘CATCHPOLE & WILLIAMS - 510 OXFORD STREET - LONDON W. - SILVERSMITHS TO THE KING - BY APPOINTMENT’.
