elephant ivory triptych carved in the round (Elephas maximus Linnaeus, 1758 or Loxodonta africana Blumenbach, 1797) depicting from the closed side the bust of Mary Stuart (Linlithgow, 8 December 1542 - Fotheringhay, 8 February 1587), Queen Consort of France.
On the inside are carved the following scenes from the queen's life:
On the left the last moments of Mary Stuart's life with the inscription 'DERNIERS MOMENT DE MARIE STUART'.
In the middle John Knox in front of Queen Mary with the inscription 'JOHN KNOX DEVANT LA REINE MARIE'.
On the right Mary Stuart in Sheffield with the inscription 'MARIE STUART A SHEFFIELD.โ
