Italian silver Crucifix, Rome, 1869-1872

Height x width: 29 x 15.5 cm. Weight 201 g
Corpus Christi on a plain tubular cross; in the upper part the cartouche with the Titulus Crucis I.N.R.I. (Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudeorum, which literally translates to β€˜Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews’).
The figure of the Saviour with arms outstretched horizontally; the head has the crown of thorns and is folded down towards the right shoulder. The legs of the Crucified One are positioned parallel and slightly bent towards the left side of the figure, the feet are slightly overlapped and nailed together and the private parts are covered by a short loincloth with a side drape.
At the bottom is the skull symbol with crossed shinbones.

Hallmarked with the chamber marks in use in Rome after 1815 for silver at 10 ounces and 16 denari (889/1000) and with the mark of the silversmith Giuseppe Pocaterra (1869-1872)
