Reliquary of St. Peter in gilded bronze and lapis lazuli, Italy, 17th-18th century
Height x width x depth: 3 x 40 x 24 cm. Total weight: 2885 g.
oval-shaped large support made of lapis lazuli, with applied bronze decorations. Lapis lazuli, a semi-precious stone, is known for its association with royalty and sacredness.
The artwork is embellished with gilded bronze elements, including two full-length winged putti flanking the relic of St. Peter, set in an architectural frame. The putti hold a crown decorated with a Latin cross, resting on a cloud adorned with the faces of two other putti. In the lower part is a small stoup.
The overall style, characterised by elaborate ornamental details and the use of gilded motifs combined with lapis lazuli, indicates that the reliquary was made between the 17th and 18th century.
