Italian ivory inlaid column, Lombardy, 19th century

Height x width x depth: 115 x 30 x 30 cm
This elegant column represents a significant example of refined Lombard cabinet-making from the second half of the 19th century. Made of ebonised wood, it is embellished with elephant ivory inlays (Elephas maximus Linnaeus, 1758 or Loxodonta africana Blumenbach, 1797) scratch-engraved and Indian ink-marked featuring vegetal motifs and geometric patterns typical of the eclectic taste of the era.
The column, probably intended to support a bust, a vase, or a work of art, is distinguished by: a molded octagonal base, which provides stability and enhances the overall structure; a shaped shaft with surfaces adorned with inlaid panels depicting stylized vegetal ornamental motifs; and an upper capital of elaborately geometric form, perfectly integrated into the overall design.

The furniture belongs to the type of works produced by the workshop of the Milanese cabinetmaker Ferdinando Pogliani (Milan 1832 - 1899). Active for the wealthy Milanese bourgeoisie, Pogliani had workshops first in Porta Vittoria and later in Montenapoleone. He is distinguished by the exceptional quality of his ivory inlays and the complexity of his figurative decorations, inspired by Neo-Renaissance tastes.
During the 19th century, Milan was a major center for high-quality cabinetry, with artisans enjoying an international reputation. Pogliani and his sons were renowned not only for creating furniture for the emerging Milanese bourgeoisie but also for restoring and faithfully reproducing historical furnishings.
The style of this column reflects the fusion of Renaissance classicism and 19th-century eclecticism.
