Italian Louis XVI inlaid trunk, Lombardy, 18th century

Height x width x depth: 51 x 71 x 41 cm.
Made of Thuja burl wood, adorned with an intricate inlay decoration crafted from various wood species, adding depth and dynamism to the depicted scenes. The main ornamental motif consists of refined mythological scenes, likely inspired by the classical Greco-Roman tradition. The meticulously detailed figures portray deities and characters from Olympus, often depicted on chariots drawn by horses or symbolic animals, all framed by floral elements, garlands, and exceptionally elegant arabesque motifs.
Dating from the late 18th to the early 19th century, the inlay work reflects a clear influence of late 18th-century cabinetmaking, with references to the Louis XVI style and the decorative trends of the early Empire period.
