Italian walnut trumeau with ivory inlays, Lombardy, mid-18th century
Height x width x depth: 280 x 135 x 60 cm
This elegant trumeau, crafted in Lombardy in the 18th century, represents an excellent example of high-quality furniture produced during the Lombard Baroque period. The structure, entirely veneered in walnut, is adorned with raised ebonized moldings that add depth and visual contrast, highlighting the artisanal skill of the era.
The lower section consists of a front with three drawers, characterized by ebonized frames that blend seamlessly with the overall aesthetic.
The scrolled feet, typical of Baroque style, lend lightness and dynamism to the entire structure.
The drop-front reveals a refined interior scarabattolo featuring four drawers and a central door inlaid with elephant ivory (Elephas maximus Linnaeus, 1758 or Loxodonta africana Blumenbach, 1797). The ivory panel, engraved and highlighted with ink, is decorated with iconographic motifs that reflect the ornamental tastes of the period.
The presence of a sliding tablet with hidden compartments adds a functional and intriguing element.
The upper section of the furniture, crowned by a tripartite architectural pediment, features two doors with ebonized reserves that elegantly frame the walnut surfaces. The internal spaces, lined with damask fabric, are designed for the display and preservation of precious objects. The raised ebonized moldings and rocaille motifs, executed with great precision, contribute to a harmonious decorative ensemble, while the balanced proportions showcase the design and construction expertise of the cabinetmaker.
This piece belongs to the tradition of Lombard cabinetry of the 18th century, a period marked by the production of refined furniture intended for aristocratic and bourgeois clientele. Baroque stylistic influences are combined with a certain decorative sobriety, typical of Lombard taste, which emphasizes the quality of the materials and the functionality of the design.
