Caesar in lorica, Venetian school?; 16th-17th century

Patinated bronze, non-coeval wooden base. Measurements with base: 36x14x8. Bronze measurements: 30x15x8 cm.

This beautiful statuette depicts a Roman emperor in lorica with a laurel wreath around his head. The armor is decorated with symmetrical leafy scrolls, on the shoulders two lion heads.

Regarding this bronze, a reference can be made to a statuette preserved in the Hermitage Museum, which depicts a Roman emperor, precisely, in lorica and with a laurel wreath on his head. Almost identical measurements and part of a series of emperors considered Renaissance.

Note the similarities between the two men-at-arms in their armour, posture and materiality of the casting.

Object of particular interest for the splendid natural translucent patina that emerges from the original artificial one, darker and bituminous.

The strong-willed and realistic expression of the face is beautiful.
