Prancing Horse, 17th-18th century

Bronze with reddish transparent patina; 32x25x8 cm
This beautiful rearing horse derives from the models of the sculptor Francesco Fanelli. Born in Florence, he worked in Genoa and later in London where his works were much appreciated by Charles I. He died perhaps in Paris.
Beautiful fusion with a transparent reddish patina typical of the best Florentine productions from the Renaissance onwards.
The body is very worked and shiny and shows the venous ramifications of the animal. The muzzle is well shaped and expressive, tightened by the bit harnesses that make it open its mouth wide and show its teeth.
The mane, then, is a masterpiece of chiselling where the long locks chase each other to form vortex nests.
The tail is tied with a bow in the style of the equestrian monument of Gattamelata in Padua.
