Bronze light brown patina; 23x28x32 cm
This large sculpture made with the lost wax method, therefore hollow inside, represents a little mystery.
A free-standing sculpture, it represents a bearded man with a snub nose, a grimace on his face from his recent beheading.
It could be the head of the Baptist claimed by Salome from King Herod, placed on the platter, or it could be the head of Goliath at David's feet.
Many examples in ancient statuary show us heads similar to this one at the feet of the young David, with the same grimace and disheveled hair. We recall the Davids of Donatello, Verrocchio and Bartolomeo Bellano, all with the enormous head of Goliath at their feet.
Our bronze seems to be inspired by these courtly examples. A sculpture of great effect to be included in the collecting universe of Wunderkammer.
