Pair of Venus Anadyomene, 18th-19th century

The subjects of these enchanting bronzes, take up the archaeological motif of Aphrodite Anadyomene. It is the birth of Venus from the waters caught in the act of wringing her hair.
Ours have a very dark patina and are clearly inspired by archaeological and Renaissance motifs. Both are supported by a vase over which a cloth is draped.
As a reference, the well-known Venus Anadyomene by Adriano Fiorentino (active in Florence in the 14th century) preserved at the Philadelphia Museum of Art is a good example.

There are archaeological examples in various materials. Highly appreciated iconography, it inspired various sculptors including Giambologna (the Fiorenza, a bronze sculpture originally placed as a crowning piece of the Labyrinth fountain, the Medici villa of Petraia, repeats this iconography).
