Black patinated bronze; 88x35x38 cm
This is a lost-wax casting, i.e. hollow inside, of exceptional dimensions (88cm), characterised by a very thick original artificial patina, black in colour, with "bituminous" features.
The sculpture draws inspiration from a famous painting on wood by Palma Vecchio, preserved in Venice in Santa Maria Formosa, made in 1524-25. The sculptor has taken up the subject, inserting the symbols of the Saint, the tower and the artillery, at the foot of the composition. He has three-dimensionalized the painting, creating an extremely original and artistic work.
Our sculpture, due to its subject and material quality, is a work made by a Venetian or Paduan foundry, most likely between the 17th and 18th centuries, intended for the decoration of some ecclesiastical or military niche, as the Saint is also the protector of men-at-arms.
